Do you remember mercurichrome? It was used as a antiseptic. Until about 1978. What 70s kid didn’t have mercurochrome put on their cut?

My mom refused to use it for some reason. I do remember breaking a thermometer and playing with the mercury in it.

For us it was heal or die lol. Maybe a soak in hot salt water.

I got an ear infection in 6th grade and it was heal or die, no doctor. And we had a great pediatrician.

I can remember falling, scraping knees or something and out came the scrub brush and soap. (and screaming, too lol)

Mercurochrome and Merthiolate were substitutes for Tincture of Iodine which burned like the dickens! Survived all three!
