She’s a pitsky. Half husky, half pit. She was neglected as a puppy and has poor socialization, but she is as sweet as can be and since she grew up with a brother she’s also good with dogs.

Hey Lazamataz...

Dog trainer and Cat Behaviorist here.

First off, Huskies are known runners. First chance they get, any open breach in a fence they run. Had a client with a 10ft. fence his dog climbed the fence weekly. All the exercise in the world didn’t tire her out. Only thing that stopped her was a car.

Pit Bull with a taste for cats, yeah I wouldn’t trust handing the dog off to someone else. Especially one that already has a taste for the red stuff. With a Pit, I just couldn’t and wouldn’t trust a rehoming in this case.

Knowing breed characteristics and as you say, the dog seems not so smart, it may be a ticking timebomb. It seems to be a bad mix of breeds and one that should have never happened.

Sorry for writing this casual assessment.

We are a dog family. Border collies are our breed of choice. We have our first female BC and she was very reactive to cars, she would’ve gotten herself killed if we didn’t do something about it. We sent her off for training that took 3 weeks. Got her back and she was a completely different dog. Best trained dog we’ve ever had. That cost us around 1200.00 and it was money well spent.

That said, My understanding of the Pit breed/cross breed tells me that more likely that dog will need to be put down. Once they get that aggressive nature for something it never goes away.

“Half husky, half pit.”

There’s your answer. You should put it down. Life is too short for pitbull drama.

Husky, escape artists that need a TON of exercise. I would look for a Husky rescue.

I’m a bit confused. How is the dog getting out? Can’t you tether it or put in a fence?

If the cats are in your yard and it happens then it’s the cat’s owners fault.

“Half husky, half pit”. She was neglected as a puppy and has poor socialization, but she is as sweet as can be and since she grew up with a brother, she is also good with other dogs”

You say you have to train her in 1-2 weeks. As a lifetime dog owner myself, I seriously doubt you can train her in that short amount of time to stop killing the neighborhood cats. I agree with the others who think she should probably be put down. Husky/pit mix is a terrible combination, IMO. She may be sweet to you now, but with that combo [Husky/Pit], and the fact that she is killing cats, I wouldn’t be surprised if she escalates in her attacks now that she has the taste of blood. She may not escalate in killing beyond cats right now, but IMO I foresee a bigger problem with her in the future.

I think you know deep down what to do, you just want affirmation you are making the right decision? IF this was my dog doing this.....one who continued to escape containment and killing cats, I would put her down. I would not want to give my problem to another person. Sad to say, there really is no training some dogs. Best of luck Laz and sorry if putting her down is what you end up doing, but I do think it would be the right decision.

Do you have young children? I would not advise having that breed in a house with young children. What made you choose her?

my dtr has two huskies....I don’t think they’ll ever be off the leash....they would just run for daylight...they can sit, speak, lie down, but still very rambunctious and will jump up .....they are about a year old....but, they are so beautiful.....and smart too.....

Tough love…. Half husky and half pit…. Geese….

The husky is a runner, both fast burst and marathon, a natural stalker and hunter, stubborn, virtually untrainable unless it's for running and usually a marvelous family dog. Hates cats! The pit side brings into mix the potential for overt or suppressed violent insanity. The only 100% solution is a trip to the woods and a 22LR in between the eyes. I recommend a rifle and not a handgun.

If you want to attempt the humane thing, go to a farm supply store and get the gear for an electric fence made to keep cattle in a field. Much less $$$ and more effective than the cute fence and collar things from pet supply big box store. If you have cattle, string the single wire about 3ft high and for dogs 1ft high. There are latches to engage/disengage at gates. Oh, it's great fun for kids as well! When no adult is looking, a kid will touch the wire once or twice. After that it's all fun and games though! Double dog dare a friend, younger sibling or cousin to touch that wire. Great childhood fun! Yes, I'm warped, grew up on a ranch.

Laz,

We have a furry companion exactly as you describe here. she was 6mos old when we got her after she passed through a couple of our relative’s homes that could not keep her.

She was obtained from the original owner who was beating her, a, puppy, and staking her out in the hot sun. Our nephew called to ask if I would take her in and said that she had a bad limp from the abuse she had endured.

I didn’t really want another dog as I still had memories of my last dog, a Yellow Lab that had been my companion for 14 years. After hearing of her story of being abused I told him to bring her to me and we would see how we got along.

She was full of energy, very independent and very affectionate. Loved to be held and petted.

What could I do?

At least I knew she would never be abused again as long as she was with me.

I have found that this breed of dog needs human interaction and loves the human physical touch. They do not like being alone and this one is not to be tied up outside away from her human companion.

She is now 5yrs old and I love her dearly It has taken patience and understanding the characteristics of the breed to come to our current place. She does have a high Prey Drive but that is what it is for those breeds. You have to know that and understand that. She is very intelligent but stubborn. She prefers to do what she wants but usually will respond after she thinks about it.

We have a few acres, with field fence, so she has plenty of room to run and play. She sleeps beside me each night and turns over on her back to get her belly rub and T L C each morning.

AS I said, this kind of dog is not a “Loner” they do not like being alone and they really enjoy the human caress. I really hope you can find a rescue that can take her and she and the next family can have lots of joy together. If I were younger, I probably would come to see her. But I am 86 yrs old and this will be my last furry companion. I thank her for being here for me.

Please give her a chance. Give her to a rescue that understands that kind of dog for rehoming. Please.
