Maybe these UFOs are probes, keeping tabs on the earth for future consumption.
There seems to be a tie between nuclear weapons and aliens. Almost like when we get close to nuclear war they keep a closer eye on us, ensuring we don’t ruin their next harvest.

One guess is to study us, e.g. we send people to study stone age tribes in South America.
Possibly for the same reasons humans traveled great distances to study other animals and civilizations.
A trip across the galaxy for a sufficiently advanced civilization maybe easier than it was for Darwin to reach the Galapagos.
Just because you are more advanced at certain things doesn’t mean you cant learn even more from others...
