How can universities do an end-run around the Supreme Court? Just watch them fight to maintain a system of racial spoils.
Lee Bollinger “laments the ruling by America’s Supreme Court against affirmative action. Universities need to pursue diversity by other means, says Columbia’s president.”
As I complete 50 years of university leadership, including 21 years as president of Columbia, I am sorry to see the Supreme Court end a process that has greatly benefited American society. I continue to believe that the country’s obligation to remediate past discrimination is far from complete.
The Healey-Driscoll Administration, along with over 100 Massachusetts Institutions of Higher Education, “dedicated to equity” stated:
Massachusetts will always be welcoming and inclusive of students of color and students historically underrepresented in higher education. We want to make sure that students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first generation students, and all students historically underrepresented in higher education feel welcomed and valued at our colleges and universities.
President Reginald DesRoches of Rice University in Houston said he was “greatly disappointed” by the decision but “more resolute than ever” to pursue diversity. “The law may change, but Rice’s commitment to diversity will not [.]”
At Schenectady’s Union College, President David Harris stated the “widely expected” decision will impact the private institution that he said is “race conscious in its admissions process.”
However, “Chief Justice John Roberts said that for too long universities have “concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice.

They are not going to stop. How long until a college degree is detrimental to getting a job?
Colleges wish to continue racial discrimination. Ok
It is a shame people don’t feel incredibly insulted by such a program.
Then reality sets in.
Whoa!
What about the “rule of law?”
Universities breed white liberal ‘elites’ condescension... They put wealthy ‘average’ kids and surround them with people they can feel superior to...
It’s sick.
Use merit - and everyone starts on an equal footing.
Will they revisit admissions for this fall? Seems like all recent rejections should be subject to reconsideration based on the court ruling.
You know the white ruling class in the Democrat Party hate Asians because the victimhood narrative they’re perpetuating on minorities doesn’t work with them. We can’t have people of color actually succeeding on their own in “racist” America!
More lawsuits will end this, with the high court ruling Asian Americans and some whites will easily win $
In the minds of the left, past discrimination will NEVER be remediated. They will find a way to bring AA back without admitting it.
Race conscious policies won’t end until college presidents are perp walked off campus in cuffs for violating the civil rights of applicants.
This is simply going to harden their sense of aggrievment and moral certitude.
When colleges and universities have sufficiently driven merit out of the pursuit of a degree, the degree itself shall be little more than an ornament, a bauble to hang on your wall, stating that you have dutifully sat through four (or five or six or seven) years, and absorbed nothing of consequence in all that time.
Affirmative Action was and always shall be a dead end, merit be damned, everybody wins a prize, or at least a trophy.
I’ve wondered for years why upscale suburban school districts don’t set up their own colleges to spare the local parents from having to shell out $50,000/year for college.
These school districts could hire part-time faculty members that also teach at high-end colleges as well as hiring retired people looking to earn extra bucks to pay high local taxes.
Since the school districts already own school buildings, the tuition might run $15,000/year and the students could live at home.
These college administrators “feel” really good about themselves as they see helping those obviously “inferior” to themselves to advance to a place in life that they obviously could NOT attain without their help...
Prove it!
A fairly solid majority of Americans in this “our democracy” thing are against Affirmative Action. That’s not new. So, why has it persisted so long? Why did it take the least democratic branch of government to do away with it? It’s almost as if the will of the people doesn’t really matter or something.
Just watch them fight to maintain a system of racial spoils. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Imagine Trump elected....no federal funding for any of the affirmaive action colleges and institutions that seek to circumvent the federal law decided by SCOTUS.
Ask yourself an interesting question....how many whites and Asians attend Howard?
Once the actual capabilities and qualifications of affirmative action graduates shines through their degrees?
Many community colleges have become quite sophisticated and large by doing this. Some have very specialized programs as well as internships into careers. Serve as feeders into 4 yr universities but with half the degree already completed at 1/3 of the price.
