And the necessity of dive masters and their decompression tables when deep diving (which most rec. divers typically don't do).

Yep, took the same certification course. Since we generally don't go below 100 feet and stay under less than an hour, I don;t think decompression is required. But, I haven't looked at those tables in 40 years.

Time at depth is the major factor in diving.

It wasn't an issue in our class since the deepest we dove was maybe 35 feet........

I would also add that it wasn't the nicest experience since the qualifying dive was I think in October and the rented dry suits were required.
