Thanks in advance for any help. I used the counter on a video editor to measure the time from the spike to when Payton was struck. The counter says .06 seconds. That seems to short to me. Anyway...at .06 travel time, if my math is right, figures to 142mph. Way too fast. I think I'm off by 50%. 70mph seems more likely. Any help is appreciated.

Collegiate Competition
The men's game at the college level doesn't draw the same attention as that other indoor sport, basketball, but it's still a showcase for guys who can throw it down. The average speed of a man’s spike in NCAA competition is charted in the 50 to 60 mph range.

Spike is from center of court and she is at the side foul line. So if she were standing on the front line that’s 3 M from the net but it’s also 1/2 the width of the court.. which is 15’ or so.. so that makes the distance from where ball was struck to where she is on that diagonal somewhere around
The square root of (9+25) meters.. which is about 5.83 meters.
But the ball also had to travel a vertical distance from where it was hit to the height of her head. So would need to calculate that hypotenuse of that triangle and add it to the 5.83M. And then you have roughly how far the ball traveled in that time.
The ball wasn’t going 143 MPH, fastest spikes by pro men players are in the 100 mph range so no way this sicko hit a 145mph
Nevermind wasn’t center court. But still no way it’s near 145mph
A really good major league fastball is 100 mph
A really hard NHL slap shot is 100 mph
So I doubt it’s faster than that
Time interval = 6 frames / 30 frames per second = 0.2 seconds
Distance traveled = 3.65 meters
Speed = Distance / Time interval
Speed = 3.65 meters / 0.2 seconds = 18.25 meters per second
Therefore, the calculated speed is 18.25 meters per second or 40.8 MPH, which sounds about right for a high school dude.

I have to figure out a better timer. .20 seconds...seems to long. Watching the video...its faster than .2s.

So what’s the related question... Is it that boys shouldn’t be playing with girls because girls can’t react fast enough? Or is that if a boy gets hit on the head like that, he can withstand the hit better than a girl can? Or is it something else?
