The United States beat Mexico 3-0 on Thursday night to reach the CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada - but the game descended into chaos.
Four players were ejected and the match was cut short by the referee after repeated homophobic chants.
The referee also showed eight yellow cards, fans threw beers onto the field of play and Weston McKennie's shirt was ripped.
The USMNT and Mexico each finished with nine players after McKennie, Sergino Dest, Cesar Montes and Gerardo Arteaga received red cards in a fiery second half.
'These are rivalry games. These are derby games. Things like this happen across the world and in no way am I embarrassed,' B.J. Callaghan said after his first game as US interim coach.
'It comes from a good place. They care about each other so much in that locker room that they're standing up for each other. Sometimes does it have an issue where we take a red card? Yeah, but when you know where it comes from, you can accept it and it's a learning lesson for us.'

I knew a Post sports journalist who had TeamUSA duty. Every time the US went down to Mexico, they got piss poured on them from water bottles.

Yeah, when I saw that bit about fans throwing beers, I knew that wasn’t beer. Although it might have been indistinguishable from Bud Light as far as flavor is concerned.

I think the NY Yankees should combine Pride Night with Bat Night. Give the bats out upon entering the stadium, and just see what happens.
Makes me want to root for Mexico. No wonder the rest of the world hates us now.

The referee lost control of that game last night when he wouldn’t give one player a yellow card for his attack on Gio Reyna. He was reluctant to give a yellow because the player was already carrying one yellow, and a second would e resulted in him being dismissed.
Then everything spiraled out of control. Two straight red cards were issued in the ensuing minutes, one for each team.
The play continued to go downhill then, with fouls everywhere and it evolved into fisticuffs.
The ref lost control of the game. If he had done what he was supposed to initially, it might have kept the players in line. Then the US team had to defend themselves from outright hits to their faces.
This was ridiculous. Mexico can’t stand to lose to the US, and it happens repeatedly.
Went to a fight one time, and a soccer match broke out.

Mexico is now third in the region behind Canada and the US, Mexico dominated the region for years.
Canada should beat the US in the Finals.
The media doesn’t identify what the slur is. They just label the fans as homophobic and doesn’t let the reader decide. That is happening more and more on a wide range of behaviors. The media is trying to be the arbiter of right and wrong and being very judgmental.
Especially with several of our players being tossed because of those red cards. It will bite us going forward.
