Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer whose soft, beguiling voice made "The Girl from Ipanema" a worldwide sensation in the 1960s and provided a huge boost to the budding bossa nova genre, has died at age 83, her family said.

Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, seen here at a jazz festival in the Hague in 1982, was a shy and untested performer when she shot to global fame in the 1960s as the beguiling voice behind the bossa nova classic "The Girl from Ipanema" © P. STOLK / ANP/AFP/File

The perfect voice for that song.

Should she be classified as a One Hit Wonder?

I just watched her. Terrible singer. Breathes a lot during singing.

I’ve had Jobim’s “Wave” album on heavy rotation recently.

Such great music.

Long and tan... The girl from Ipanema goes walking.... RIP Astrud Gilberto.

Mark Steyn had a write-up on The Girl from Ipanema some time back. The recording was almost an afterthought, and Gilberto was someone's wife and was just hanging around, so they asked her to sing the lyrics. Some of the biggest things in pop culture are often accidents.

Kinda weird for the time for a song about a hot, sexy girl to be sung by another girl...
