Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer, songwriter and entertainer whose off-hand, English-language cameo on “The Girl from Ipanema” made her a worldwide voice of bossa nova, has died at age 83.
Musician Paul Ricci, a family friend, confirmed that she died Monday. He did not provide additional details.
Born in Salvador, Bahia and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Gilberto became an overnight, unexpected superstar in 1964, thanks to knowing just enough English to be recruited by the makers of “Getz/Gilberto,” the classic bossa nova album featuring saxophonist Stan Getz and her then-husband, singer-songwriter-guitarist João Gilberto.
“The Girl from Ipanema,” the wistful ballad written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, was already a hit in South America. Iconic song.
RIP
Ahhh
WOW. Huge cultural impact she had. RIP.
Now it’s the Boy from Impalenema Goes Ouch!!!
Her song takes me to a happy sad place.
Some of the best music on the planet came out of Astrid and Gilberto and Jobim. RIP
ping
She’s someone, it seems, everyone has heard.
Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 too.
She also sang “fly Eastern, number one to the sun” in their commercials back in the late ‘60s.
this generation only knows it from the recent netflix version of "the girl from ipanema" which was used as a platform for feminaziism , an entire series dedicated to how horrible men are.
kind of a shame that the song got hijacked by feminist netflix propaganda ( but I still bingewatched (cringewatched) the entire series
Yup. Bosa Nova.
They can tie me down on a sandhill on that beach, cover me with honey, and invite the ants, but...I ain’t watching that. Never.
She was singing the song as a demo, her vocals are never intended to be released. Jaoa Gilberto's daughter by another wife, Babel is a good singer.
It would be fitting if her funeral cortege included a trip on an elevator.
RIP
What?
