Dear Jane,
I am the mother of a bright, beautiful, friendly 15-year-old who I love very much. But in recent years, a pit of jealousy has started growing over just how talented and popular my daughter has become. I have spent much of my life feeling little more than average. I’m not ugly – but I’m not pretty. I’m not dumb – but I’m not what you would consider intelligent. I have some good friends – but popular is never a word someone would use to describe me.
My daughter, on the other hand, is spectacular. She has an enormous group of friends, all of whom fight spend time with her, she’s one of the highest achieving students in her class, and she has a confidence that most adults can only dream of.
I should be proud of all this, I know I should. But instead I’ve started resenting her for it – despising her even. And I find myself trying to put her down at every available opportunity. I know how silly this sounds. A grown woman being jealous of a 15 year old is crazy enough, but of her own daughter? But I can’t help thinking to myself: 'What does she have that I don’t?

No, you should be satisfied with this and thank God with humility. Oops, I used the “G” word. There can’t be an answer there! /s Maybe, just maybe, if you adjust your value system and hence how you behave you will have peace of mind. Look up to God and value godly behaviors. Mostly certainly don’t look towards a precocious, immature child for an example. Be the adult and help your child. Your child certainly isn’t a finished product.
This is where being a person of faith is an advantage. You have to face your faults and ask God for help. You are accountable. And you already know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, just as your daughter is.
As the mother of a beautiful daughter I soon realized when she was a baby that she was the star and I was merely part of her entourage. Not at all insulted by this though. I was proud and humbled that God had given this gift to my husband and me.

Be thankful and encourage her.
Teach her discipline, self-respect, and self-control.
Ensuring she is grounded in faith in Christ is the best start.

Her daughter is her creation, after all. 9 months in the womb. The pain of labor. The joy of motherhood, having a loving toddler than child, then blossoming into a fine young woman?
I have a daughter and a son I love to pieces. Everything they excel at is better than me, and boy am I proud!
This is why women don’t run the world- they are jealous of each other.

Poor mom...most moms would die to have a pretty, friendly, well-liked, smart daughter.
Girls like her daughter often become the “mean girls” and are full of themselves. Then they abuse others, get abused, often get pregnant, and turn into lonely wrecks.
Mom needs to help her daughter to prevent that from happening.
