Authorities are working to determine the cause of death of a humpback whale that was found on Long Island.
At about 4 p.m. Thursday, June 1, the carcass of the whale floated into Shinnecock Bay in Southampton.
Southampton Town Police officers and staff from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society then arrived on the scene.
The animal was eventually towed out of the bay, back into the ocean and the carcass was secured to the beachfront, west of the inlet, Southampton Town Police said.
Heavy machinery is being brought in to drag the whale onto the beach on Friday morning, June 2, police said, before the necropsy is due to be performed prior to the burial of the whale.

I’ve got dynamite.
I thought of that, but he wouldn’t be that far North.
I grew up at the Jersey Shore. Spent much of my early years in and around the ocean and river. From the age I would have been aware of whale sightings until a dozen or so years ago, they were very rare. A friend of mine mated on a party boat out of Belmar several summers and never mentioned any whale sightings.
The whale population must be booming, since not a week goes by without a dead one washing up somewhere within 20 miles of here. A couple of local party boats (head boats to some of you) are even doing whale watching cruises.
The sea was angry that day my friends
Growing up on the Northern Oregon coast we had a dead whale wash up on shore. Folks on the highway 5 miles away could smell the stench...It faded in a few weeks.

Why wouldn’t they tow it out to deep water and feed the cycle of life? Why bury it?
Such a classic.
I thought Hillary lived in Chappaqua?
We saw a dead whale on the beach in Montauk , the easternmost beach on Long Island. It was amazingly huge. People were letting their kids climb around on it. Bad idea, I thought. It was so recently dead, it might still have working nervous system and jaws. Overprotective mom, I was.

Are the Jersey beaches closed again?
