1980s. DuPont held the patent on refrigerants like R-12 and R-22 among others. That was about to run out and there would be generic versions. So we had the ozone hole and those refrigerants became a menace. They were outlawed and along comes DuPont with the new, not as good replacements, which of course DuPont has the patent on, and the problem was solved. We never heard any more about the ozone hole.

So, deeper than mere fake science. Oh well.... DH had a huge freaking problem trying to get freon or whatever they have now to refill his truck’s AC. Took forever to find a place to do it and it was pricey.
