Yes I think so. Did they even have portable oxygen tanks then?
Update: Toll now at 11 deaths.
And more missing.
The other problem is unqualified climbers create unnecessary bottlenecks and delays for other climbers, especially near the summit.
Can’t mess around. Climb, get to the summit, take a couple of pictures and get the hell out of there.

Yeah, but a lot of blame for that should rest with the operators who advertise and sell positions for the climb. They take the money (and it is big bucks) and give safety only a passing, half-assed thought.
Yeah, I guess they were primitive. Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought they were going to try it without Oxygen.
I’ll have to go back and re-watch it….

They found one of their tanks not far from where Mallory’s body was found.
They never found Sandy Irvine, but not for lack of trying. Everyone wants to find his camera, as you just know Mallory and Irvine would have taken some photos if they had reached the summit.
Ever seen the movie “Everest”?
Based on true events it’s one of those flicks I doubt I’ll ever watch again....should be mandatory viewing before anyone is allowed to attempt that ascent.....what a gut punch.
Yeah, I have seen it!
Last year, one of our astronomy club members took a trip to the Everest Base Camp. (This lady goes all over, I don’t know how she can afford it, especially having kids). She is supposed to do a presentation on it some time, should be interesting. Her intention wasn’t to climb the mountain, just to visit Base Camp and, I suppose, interview the participants. She did do it, but hasn’t told the rest of us about her experiences yet.
Not even sane. If it was A/V node issues like branch block or angina or whatever it was that prompted the pacemaker, no doctors, no treatment, and no way to save your azz. Try Pike's Peak or the Matterhorn, but leave the Big One to the pros like Kami Rita. RIP.
That famous picture is from 2012, Subin Thakuri who has at least a dozen ascents took the snap, 234 ascented that day and 4 died.
I don't do that sheet anymore..
Yes, that was my first trip to any altitude like that...very unsettling.
For the Sherpas it’s a high paying gig, certainly by Nepalese standards. That doesn’t make it any safer however.
It’s very dangerous to attempt removal of a frozen body from the death zone - since the would-be rescuers are clinging to life themselves.
10% fatality rate.
There is a fast way down.....
True
More people die falling off ladders than Mt. Everest :)
“There is a fast way down.....”
Down into a deep gorge, which at least gets him off the trail but first you have to chisel the bodies loose in order to slide them down into the gorge and that expends precious oxygen.
