DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. Just my personal experience.

I have HEARD that melatonin keeps the flush at bay.

But I have also heard that taking melatonin regularly can inhibit your body’s ability to produce it naturally.

What I do: I have niacin in powder form. I mix it in a little water and then I sip it throughout the day. (It’s bitter, so you probably don’t want to make this your daily hydration. OTOH, I haven’t tried mixing it in a large volume of water, so maybe when it’s diluted, you won’t notice the taste.)

It’s been my experience (after lots of trial and error), that the flush is based on how large a dose of niacin that I take all at once. Spreading it out during the day works for me to prevent the flush. I have also noticed that if I have food in my stomach, especially something with some fat in it, the flush is reduced. Despite that, I have no problem taking a sip first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

I started with a smaller dose and increased until I got the flush reaction.

The flush (for a small amount, not some massive overdose) is tolerable. Not pleasant, but not a huge deal. ... at leas that was my experience. On occasions where I got the flush, it started about 20 minutes after taking the niacin and lasted for about an hour. YMMV. It probably depends a lot on your personal metabolism, body chemistry, size of dose, etc.

Hope this helps.

I appreciate the details about your experience with niacin, the dose and flushing. Thank you.

I have HEARD that melatonin keeps the flush at bay.

It does, but it takes large doses proportionate with the niacin dose. It can completely mitigate it. I got up to 3g doses thrice daily of niacin, but it took a 300mg of mellie to to mitigate the flush. This is a therapeutic dose, not a daily maintenance dose. Daily doses should be around 1g a day to manage inflammation.

I mix it in a little water and then I sip it throughout the day.

When taking high doses we made a pitcher for the day in the morning. My wife was a sipper, but I just downed my glass. We made a 1% niacin solution. 10g of niacin to 999g of water to make a liter. So, 100mg of the solution woujld give you 1g of niacin. You could, of course, dilute it more. I like this because the math is easy for the wife (LOL).

I enjoy the flush now because it's just a little bit since I'm used to it. You never experience that first freak out like the first time again. When you dissolve the niacin in water and down it
