Continental drift may, in the last few tens of millions of years, have interfered with ocean current circulation between the North Pole and equator. With reduced circulation, small changes could have big effects.

Just tossing out a speculation.

Absolutely. But for the past 34M years, the continents have been in their present positions, with the exception of joining No and So America.

The issue is how to explain the periodic nature for eh ice ages of the past 4M years. Orbital forcing alone can’t do this, as the same orbital forcing has been around for millions more years.
