I was a Surface Warfare Officer before shifting over to Naval Intelligence. I got to ride USS Dallas (SSN-700) and USS Cincinnati (SSN-693) for two trips up North. (You do the math.) I am sure I have a radiation exposure record on file somewhere.

The Soviet subs were indeed noisy. The first time a Project 705 Lira (English: Lyre)(NATO: Alfa) made a speed run off the north cape of Norway it was picked up on the San Juan SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System) array.

Here's something that would keep me up at night if I lived anywhere near one of these things The Soviet Union's Deadly Abandoned Nuclear Generators . Evidently there were about 2500 of the things. There are probably over 500 still remaining in the Russian Federation. The ones in the former constituent republics have been cleaned up.

So I did some quick math: We parked the Cincinnati in 1996. ( I have a piece of it sitting on my desk). If you’ve been CPAPing for 23 years at least you made it off the boat before you started with the CPAP.

If your duty station on the nukes was forward you might not have worn a dosimeter or film badge. But if you remember wearing one or the other then you do, indeed have a permanent exposure record. If you were taken hostage for a couple of missions on those boats your only real health risk is coffee addiction.
