So I did some quick math: We parked the Cincinnati in 1996. ( I have a piece of it sitting on my desk). If you’ve been CPAPing for 23 years at least you made it off the boat before you started with the CPAP.
If your duty station on the nukes was forward you might not have worn a dosimeter or film badge. But if you remember wearing one or the other then you do, indeed have a permanent exposure record. If you were taken hostage for a couple of missions on those boats your only real health risk is coffee addiction.
One of my coworkers was on one that got diverted posthaste to the Persian Gulf area during the hostage crisis. Everyone that smoked only had about a weeks worth on them. Interestingly they had enough coffee, and he said that was probably the one thing that running out of would risk mutiny (LOL)
I rode the boats in the mid to late 80s, well pre- Desert Storm.
Having already gone through Main Propulsion School (non-nuke) I asked for the full tour of engineering. Nobody was going to tell me I didn't have the clearance for it. I was cleared for stuff the CO wasn't.
I was surprised at how small the reactor vessel was. Everything was exactly where you would want it and clean enough to put a surgical suite to shame.
