hey...I played the coronet...never made 1st chair. I could play the notes but I didn’t make music.
Bandmaster loved Sousa among others. When he was frustrated with us, he’d have us play a Sousa march in a quick time\cut time speed that hasn’t yet been defined. We ended up gassed.
In the movie, “Stars & Stripes Forever”, Sousa is holding auditions for coronets.
One player was ok, Sousa takes his own coronet says something like “I was looking for something like this, then he proceeds to trill and triple tongue his way thru a movement.
The tryout-er then puts on his hat, cases his horn, and adioses.
