I remember the washboards. The women had a stick[ broom handle or mop handle] that they stirred the clothes in the pot fished them out to cool off, then rubbed them on the washboard. The children pumped the water for the wash, to water the animals, and for the house. What would children do if they had to do that today?

We had a well, but not with a pump.

It was located about a hundred feet from the opposite side of the house, and you let down a long tube on a chain into a terracotta pipe. The tube had a valve at the bottom to let in water and when you got it back up you pulled a release on the top to let the water out into a bucket you then carried to the house. The water had grit and clay in the bottom, so I didn’t drink as much as I should have.....................
