Non-competes for working peons can be negated because people have to earn a living, but with big media contracts it is a whole different story.

Think of an NFL coach who gets fired with two years left on a contract that pays him $5M per year. If the team pays him the full $10M for the remainder of the contract, he’d have almost no leverage to get a non-compete arrangement overturned unless the contract specifically covered this scenario in his favor.
