DeSantis will lose to Trump for 2024, but he will damage Trump in the general election. Not as much as Trumps enemies want, because most people already have made their minds up against Trump, but maybe enough to throw the election.
In the process, DeSantis will destroy his chances for the presidency because Trump loyalists will never forgive him for sabotaging Trump in 2024.
Which is too bad, because these same Trump supporters see DeSantis as the guy to follow Trump in 2028.
The problem for DeSantis is that he probably sees 2024 as his time because the entire uni party Establishment is willing to give him tons of money and support to destroy Trump in 2024. They won't be so generous in 2028 because they really dislike DeSantis almost as much as they hate Trump, but they need him to challenge Trump in 2024 to take Trump out.

That’s nonsense. It depends on how DeSantis runs, if he runs. If he runs in a crusade to destroy Trump then yes your assessment is correct. If he runs with the intent for the GOP to win in 2024 and make the case on why he’s the right person then no it won’t hurt Trump because all those people who voted for DeSantis are only going to be more fired up to vote to make sure the Dems don’t win in November 2024.
That’s why the real Trump supporters and those who want the GOP to win in 2024 do want DeSantis to run a clean campaign for the GOP nomination. The rest are obviously supporting the efforts of the Democrats.
Also, I suspect the Dems orchestrated DeSantis’ landslide gubernatorial victory in 2022 to advance him to the next level by sacrificing their pawn Crist. I’m not saying he wouldn’t have won without the Dem’s help, but the margin of his victory seems too good to be true.
So, by creating an illusion of invincibility, they’re baiting DeSantis and his supporters into a premature run for the presidency.
If he waits, he will be term limited out of office in 2025, and he will have plenty of time to organize for a serious run in 2028.

I think your analysis is right on the money. The bottom line is the GOPe doesn’t care who wins the White House as long as it isn’t Trump, and frankly not DeSantis either. If RDS were to get the GOP nomination Trump would probably mount an independent bid splitting the Republican vote and making it a clear victory for Biden. I think the GOPe will be happy with that scenario and are o doubt secretly hoping for that to happen.
No, the people who like DeSantis are those who actually want to win and are not addicted to losing for the third time with Donald Trump.
