You got me. I’m unused to thinking of North Americans as Americans. Maybe that’s why Mexicans feel entitled to crash your southern border.

If that's the case, then anyone in North America, Central America, or South America could be called an American.

I read something a few years back that made sense to me. We are called Americans because the word America is in our official name: the United States of America. Mexico is officially the United States of Mexico, so they are Mexicans. Those in Canada are called Canadians. (LL, does Canada have an official name other than only Canada? I really don't know. All I've ever read or heard is Canada.)
