I know you were joking but we are getting more and more of our food (And other stuff) through non-cash sources. It is mostly barter for services, sometimes gold or silver. Worth mentioning.
Eggs are barter items, as are meat chickens. Our store-bought grocery bill for two adults, FWIW, runs around $100 a week these days...
For example, seized, illegal moose kills are processed and the meat distributed free to the community several times a year. A friend ashore raises chickens. We are surrounded by a 600+ vessel commercial fishing fleet. Hunters and fishermen have dogs (And cats and horses). We own the Pet Center and Veterinary clinic.
