That wheel woke up and chose violence. Even came back to hit em one more time.

Seriously tho, what are the chances? Just unbelievable. I'll never feel safe driving down the highway again.

I remember an incident on I-5 near Seattle back in the early 90’s when a semi lost a wheel. There is a section of the highway with a pretty decent grade that runs straight as an arrow for about three miles.

The wheel rolled all the way from top to bottom, rolling against the flow of traffic and reaching speeds around 50 mph, all while traffic swerved and dodged the damned thing.

As I recall it finally crashed into some vehicles, but only after losing most of its velocity by rubbing and careening off of guardrails.

Scary stuff.

“Don’t ever buy a Ram truck.”

I’ll never buy anything else. Survived two serious accidents sitting behind the wheel of a RAM. Both times the truck was totaled and I walked away.

“It seems to me that this shows one of the main drawbacks of teeny tiny econoboxes.”

I don’t think the effect would have been much different on anything but a full-sized semi tractor. The accident may not have launched a Crown Vic into the air and/or flipped it over, but it surely would have jerked the car sideways to be hit by oncoming traffic with little or no time to react on the part of following or next-lane-over traffic.

The idiots that put these high offset rims on their pickups are stressing the wheel studs, the hubs, and suspension joints when those factory suspensions were not made for those wheels.

Yes. Reverse wheels of any kind aren't as strong in the centers as wheels that are designed right. On pickups with high centers of gravity, they're even worse. Those wheels don't serve any purpose other than looking silly, making pickups more open wheeled and giving them a wider footprint (not good for offroad travel).

A wheel like that going under the front end of a pickup would have yielded a similar result, by the way. And the driver of the truck that lost the wheel will have a serious insurance problem.

**And the driver of the truck that lost the wheel will have a serious insurance problem.**

For years I’ve been expecting insurance companies to lobby lawmakers to outlaw aftermarket rims that are, say, more that 2 inches greater offset than factory.

My brother got passed on the left by a mounted tire once. It was good he watched where it went because it was his left rear tire,

Same thing happened to my uncle when I was a kid. We were in his car, heading out to go fishing one morning, when a mounted tire passed the car on the left. Turned out it was the left wheel of the boat trailer. The boat launch was postponed a bit, but the other men near the launch ramp did help retrieve the wheel - after they stopped laughing.

What a freak accident, hope everyone survived.

My son had a tire repair done at a shop, picked up the pickup, and driving home he lost the wheel going 60 miles an hour on the freeway. It tore up the rear fender, but fortunately, there were no injuries or damage to other vehicles. He was fortunate. I carry a cross-bar socket wrench in my car and always check the wheel nuts after anyone works on the wheels of my vehicle. It’s right in the box with the battery booster cables.

I was driving a tractor trailer on the DC beltway I was in right lane and pickup in middle lane little bit in front. Rt rear wheel popped off his truck and started bouncing down my lane about 10ft in the air right in front of me!

Wow, I can picture every mile of the DC Beltway, and it's a 360-degree heart attack waiting to happen even at 2 AM. Glad you survived!

My crazy car story is driving uphill in my remote exurban neighborhood on a very windy day, when some guys constructing a new house lost control of a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood and it spiraled up against the side of my moving car, scraping the paint all along the (empty) passenger side. Had I driven up one second earlier it might have hit point first into the front windshield.

We had a perfectly horrendous crash this past Wednesday 3/22/23 on the Baltimore Beltway, killing 6 road construction workers: one man, one woman, a father and son, and two brothers.

Two idiots were speeding in the fast lane in spite of the construction workers just separated by a Jersey wall. They collided, which flipped one of the cars over into the jersey-barricaded work area and killed 6 workers, landing upside down in a crumpled mass.

Of course, the killer driver survived. It will suck to be her for the rest of her life. I imagine the other stupid azz speeder, a male, won’t be feeling too great about it, either.
