A Chicago woman said a squatter with a long criminal history has taken over her dead mother’s home and has refused to leave since September.
Darthula Young told CBS Chicago this week that she received a call from neighbors in September that there had been a shooting inside the Chatham neighborhood home that her mother had left to the family after she died.
When Young arrived at the home, the locks had been changed and there was a bullet hole in the front window, she told the outlet.
"The person who had been shot in the apartment – this guy named Takito Murray - came back from the hospital, and informed us and the police that he now lived there, that he had rights – he was professional squatter," Young said.
Young said Chicago police told her she needs to go through the court system and she has been trying to do so with no success since September.
"It's been a nightmare," Young said.
CBS Chicago reported that Murray has been arrested for drug and weapons charges at least six times since 2017 and the outlet was able to confront Murray outside the home.
"I'm in the process of finding somewhere to stay," Murray told the outlet. "You can't just move like that."

And then you would have to stay in the house,otherwise the squatter would break in while you went to work.

Report a crine at the address. When the cops show up and bring him outside, go inside and lock him out. Then have him arrested for trespassing.

This is correct. More precisely, they have a deal with the FBI to sting any civilians who try to pay them to do crimes, where the customer gets arrested, and the informant keeps the money.
An open can of this stuff through the window and the problem is solved.

I had experience with one of those once. We took an investment property (house) back to keep if from going to foreclosure. There were five or six parties in the investment group. We decided to rent it out rather than sell it in a down market and we put one guy in charge of finding a tenant. He had one job and all he could find was a professional squatter. The renter paid maybe two rent checks and quit. It took nearly seven months to evict him from the property and, during that time, he destroyed the place. Fortunately, he didn’t change the locks or declare he owned the house. That was the last investment property we ever owned.
