Indeed it does! The bastardy connection only started with Henry VIII siring some illegitimate offspring and giving them the surnames ‘FitzRoy’ and ‘FitzHenry.’ That’s 300 or 400 years after the Normans arrived in Ireland.

Fascinating history. Norman adventurers came to Ireland under the leadership of Strongbow to fight a war for a native Irish king. Before you know it, there’s a rising Norman state in England’s backyard. Thus began 800 years of trouble and woe.

I had not heard of FitzHenry, but FitzRoy means “son of the king.” H8’s one bastard son was given the moniker FitzRoy and I believe he had been acknowledged. He died young though, so never challenged the throne.
