Roku Channel Recommendations
3/11/2023 | Me

Posted on 03/11/2023 3:19:37 PM PST by ducttape45

Good evening fellow Freepers. I just got me a Roku device and I'm looking for suggestions for what I should add to my channel lineup.

I got some already, but I'm looking for more conservative news channels as well as family friendly movie/TV channels to subscribe to.

Thanks all!

We had a Comcast “Triple Play” (Internet, Cable TV, and phone). We canned the cable and use either an AppleTV streaming box (main residence) and a Roku streaming box (vacation cabin). Both work really well and I cannot recommend one over the other.

One thing to watch out for is adding too many pay services. We have Amazon Prime (mainly for shipping) and Netflix. I added Hulu. We tried Peacock. I added YouTube Premium lately, but it is VERY expensive at $30/month, so I’ll probably drop that. But the price of the services can quickly add up to the old cable price.

We have Spectrum Internet at our vacation place. Spectrum offers a “TV Choice” streaming service where they provide something like 30 basic channels and you get to select another 10 from a menu list. You don’t have to use their cable service — just the streaming channels.

My wife mainly picked sports channels (8 of the 10) and I got TCM plus another movie channel for my two. The TV Choice package is very economical. We access the channels using the Spectrum app on the Roku box.

Good luck. The whole setup is easy and it is easy to use, too.

There are lots of free streaming content providers out there, too, but you have to put up with ads. I have a very low tolerance for ads, so I’d rather have some streaming service without ads. But watch that budget!

Start with Freevee and Pluto. If you don’t mind a pay channel, we have been enjoying BritBox($75/year). Oddly, Pluto was the only place on the internet I could find “Judgement at Nuremberg”. We have also added YouTube TV, but it is $65/month.

There is a Rumble App. I don’t see that listed here.

Roku just lost a huge chunk of change in the SVB collapse. You might want to have a Plan B ready to go in case they fold or drastically reduce their offerings.

Roku stick has a Roku channel which is free and has tons of good programming within it. Both streaming and live channels with live movies and news etc. Like Newsmax and RAV.

First of all, refuse any and all “free trials” as you will be automatically charged for many of them if you don’t cancel.

I would also delete any channels that are preloaded - you may actually reload them but best to start fresh so you don’t have any junk taking up space.

These are the free channels I would add. You find these by going to “Streaming Channels”, then choosing “Search”:

Positiv TV
Classic Reruns TV
WeatherNation
Classic Film Time
Xumo
Redbox
STIRR
Crackle
YouTube (*not* “YouTubeTV”)
Rumble
The Roku Channel
Freevee
Tubi
Pluto TV
Plex
MyTuner
VTuner
PragerU

Get a Mohu Leaf antenna to get over the air channels which include MeTv and Metv+. It will work simultaneously with Roku streaming. There are tons of other channels on that as well. It’s easy to set up. You can also use Best Buy services to buy it and set it up.
