Heat pump makers worried by EU crackdown on climate-warming F-gases
Euractiv ^ | 2 Mar 2023 | Nikolaus J. Kurmayer

The European Parliament’s environment committee voted on Wednesday (1 March) for a quick phasedown of F-gas refrigerants, in a move that drew criticism from the heat pump industry.

...Yet, not everyone is happy with the direction taken by the European Parliament. Some industries have strongly opposed scaling back F-gases at such speeds, with the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) leading the charge.

“This position represents a ban on equipment containing F-gases, in some cases as early as 2026,” EHPA said in a statement, warning that restricting F-gases “risks significantly limiting the number of heat pumps available in certain market segments.”

My wife and I installed a heat pump in our house a year or so back, to replace the old AC unit but with ahole quadrupling the price of gas, we also used the heat pump for heating this winter, sidelining our beloved radiant floor system.

When we finished installing it, it was announced that the R-410a was being forced out and replaced, the lifeblood of our new heat pump!

Cram down by the government and advantages given to chosen producers are the path to a corner-cutting crap product. Be it an EV or a heat pump.

I was recently reminded of "The Mythical Man-Month" and that clearly shows how it turns to crap. A fun read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mythical_Man-Month

Supposed to get 14” tonight with 35 mph winds.

Plenty of dry wood still in the racks.

What is a heat pump?

An air conditioner that works both ways.

Basically an air conditioner running backwards.

I was kidding, I understand the concept.

Everyone I know in Central NH who got swindled into shutting off their oil heat has been freezing their asses off for weeks - hence the remark about the wood. Wood heat from a cast iron stove is still the best, I think.

If you are heating with a heat pump, what happens when the power goes off?

Long ago when I was young and crazy we heated with wood and it consumes a lot of time.
OH, and time is money.

So we installed a very efficient and comfortable radiant floor heating system 94% efficient WM Ultra boiler.

All was well until ahole shut down the pipeline and gas went to the moon.
So we used the heat pump and saved over one hundred dollars a month.

"The Mythical Man-Month" by Fred Brooks, has never been out of print. Truths for each new generation of "doers" to absorb.

If one woman can have a baby in 9 months, can 9 women have a baby in one month … ?

The first air conditioning system we ever had installed
way back when I was a kid used ammonia as the refrigerant.

“...what happens when the power goes off?”

For us, the Automatic Transfer Switch starts the natural-gas fired 26 kW Briggs and Stratton emergency generator. The lights go out for a few seconds while the switch transfers to the generator.

As long as we don’t lose BOTH NG and electricity simultaneously, we are good. But if the greeniacs get us to that point where both are unreliable, then it’s time for a 500 gallon propane tank.

I installed the system about 16 months ago and, though we’ve had some fierce windstorms and snowfalls, the power has stayed on! Wouldn’t you know it?!

We had MINUS THIRTEEN FAHRENHEIT for a few days over Christmas and ours worked just fine????

If the house is poorly insulated /not sealed well, a heat pump or high-efficiency furnace will not work unless oversized.
To achieve maximum efficiency they put out a minimum of heat. An old furnace could pump out 140F, my heat pump seldom exceeds 100F.

Same thing that happens when you are cooling with a heat pump, and the power goes off. Except you can't make it better by building a fire.

Fire up your very large Diesel GenSet with the radiator located in your mud-room?

“”As long as we don’t lose BOTH NG and electricity simultaneously, we are good. But if the greeniacs get us to that point where both are unreliable, then it’s time for a 500 gallon propane tank.””

Obama had 2,500 gallons of Natural Gas tanks installed on just one of his many properties. The Oregon Governor just upgraded her mansion to the latest in Natural Gas, and installed huge propane tanks. She specifically campaigned on getting rid of Natural Gas (except for herself, of course).

After President Trump let the drillers Drill Baby Drill, we became the Saudi Arabia of Natural Gas. We began exporting huuuuuge ships full of LNG to Europe. Some European countries with water ports are building large, offshore LNG processing facilities. They can, or will, receive and use the LNG instead of depending upon Russia.

We have thousands of years of hydrocarbons. Abundant, inexpensive energy equals more and more freedom, which is why the democRATS label it as evil. They can install massive gas tanks on their properties, but the rest of us need to sit next to the homeless on mass transit, walk, use a bicycle, while they are warm and cozy, at home and in their large SUVs, private jets, on and on.

The Europeans got DAMN LUCKY this winter, as the temperature stayed warm and the US sent every drop of gas we could liquefy to there (thereby sending natural gas prices soaring in parts of America), after they allowed us to BLOW UP THEIR PIPELINES.

They keep doing these stunts and soon enough they’ll find that big-daddy US will no longer take care of them, and they simply freeze to death.

What’s even more sick is that the 410a phaseout was supported and lobbied for in govt by all the trade organizations. They get a big pay day everytime this happens. New units. New tools. New training. The good news for you is 410 will be around for awhile yet. But it’s madness.

Yep - heat pumps are actually pretty decent, but once it gets near the mid-20s, they can’t do the job...then we pay for the electric heating elements...
