Correct, I just don’t seem to having a problem buying virtually anything other than a car. If there are other upstream problems, it seems to me that they’re not very visible at the consumer level.

The ICs that go into PCs and the like do not have the high demand that embedded electronics suffers. On the other hand, there are so very many types of microcontroller ICs from each manufacturer, giving embedded designers very wide choices. I think the failure comes from trying to repopulate so many different kinds. For example, Microchip/Atmel makes something like 2,000 different uP's. That is a tough restart.
