The ICs that go into PCs and the like do not have the high demand that embedded electronics suffers. On the other hand, there are so very many types of microcontroller ICs from each manufacturer, giving embedded designers very wide choices. I think the failure comes from trying to repopulate so many different kinds. For example, Microchip/Atmel makes something like 2,000 different uP's. That is a tough restart.

Obviously you know something about it...but still, I would think auto companies would have the money to get the attention of chip manufactures than someone who makes USB chargers, for example, regardless of the quantity difference.
