Republican Sen. Marco Rubio urged President Joe Biden on Friday to “immediately” cancel a trip by members of the Cuban Border Guard and diplomats from the island to visit the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in Washington and tour port facilities in North Carolina next week.
In a letter sent Friday, the Florida senator highlighted that the Cuban Border Guard, which acts as the country’s coast guard, is part of Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior, which is under U.S. sanctions for human-rights violations.
Rubio, a senior member of the Senate’s Foreign Affairs committee and vice chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, also suggested the delegation might include Cuban spies.
“There is also a high likelihood that the delegation will include members of Cuba’s intelligence agencies,” he wrote, adding that the invitation “to Cuban intelligence operatives into sensitive national security facilities in order to share with them our nation’s coastal and maritime security protocols is an egregious dereliction of duty that betrays one of the most fundamental tenets of the oath you have sworn, to protect America from foreign enemies.
“You must cancel this visit immediately, and explain to the American people how this was allowed to happen on your watch,” he added.
Rubio said Congress was notified that the visit had been planned by the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department. A State Department spokesperson told the Miami Herald: “We have nothing to confirm at this time.”
The Biden administration resumed migration talks and law enforcement cooperation dialogues with Cuba, prompted by the largest mass migration event from the island in several decades. While most of the more than 300,000 Cubans who came to the United States in 2022 crossed the border with Mexico, the U.S. Coast Guard also had to respond to a dramatic increase of Cuban migrants trying to reach South Florida shores.

US Formally Requests Ovidio Guzman Lopez’ Extradition

The United States government has formalized its request for the extradition from Mexico of Ovidio Guzmán López “El Ratón”, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. The formal request comes a week ahead of the March 5, 2023 deadline set for 40 days after his arrest in Culiacan which resulted in waves of violence in Sinaloa and other areas of Mexico. The operation and its aftermath left 29 dead, including 10 soldiers. The raid involved laying siege to the town of Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa, and the neighboring town of Jesús María for more than 24 hours.
“El Raton” is being charged in Washington, DC with several counts of conspiracy to import cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the US. His indictment dates back to July 2017 but remained classified until January 2019.....
Federal sources confirmed that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) received the letter formalizing the extradition request together with the file containing evidence to support the charges against Ovidio for the request from the US. The FGR must present the file before the federal control judge of the State of Mexico that is handling the extradition process and request a hearing date.
Since his capture, two Mexican judges have suspended his extradition to the US without prior judicial proceedings. These decisions do not halt the extradition process, but instead, oblige appeals judges to ensure that the provisions of the bilateral extradition treaty are being respected.....
Iranian Warships Finally Dock in Rio de Janeiro After U.S. Issues Sanction Threat

Two Iranian warships are in the port of Rio de Janeiro. The government of the socialist Lula da Silva gave them permission to dock on its coast. President Biden has not said anything about it, although he recently met with the Brazilian president. However, voices such as that of Senator Ted Cruz warn about the grave danger of allowing this type of Iranian presence in Latin America.
“The docking of Iranian warships in Brazil is a dangerous development and a direct threat to the safety and security of Americans(...) These Iranian warships are already sanctioned, and so the port in Rio de Janeiro where they docked is now at risk of crippling sanctions, as are any Brazilian companies that provided them services or accepted payments”, Cruz said today after it became known that the warships were already in Brazilian port.
Makran and Dena are the names of the two warships now in Brazilian territory. The Makran is the largest of the entire Iranian navy and the fact that they are now in Brazilian territory is a historic event for the Iranians, Iran never had the capacity to travel so far. It also appears that the Iranian regime’s plans are to move the ships from Brazil to the Panama Canal, which is a vital passage for all of Latin America and so important that it connects 6% of the world’s trade.
Earlier this year, the commander of Iran’s navy expressed: “We have been present in all the strategic straits of the world (...) In one of which we will be present this year and we plan to be present in the Panama Canal”.
On the absent actions of President Biden regarding this historic event Senator Cruz was also blunt: “President Biden calls Brazilian President da Silva his friend and said he was honored to host him at the White House, and da Silva himself is a Chavista aligned against the United States and our interests, so either these risks were not conveyed or the Brazilians did not care. Nevertheless, our anti-terrorism laws are designed to protect Americans and are not optional.”
Regarding the level of threat posed by the presence of these ships in Latin America, counterterrorism expert and executive director of the Center for a Secure Free Society, Joseph Humire, told Americano Media:
“Iran’s warships berthing in Brazil is the evolution of Iran’s strategic penetration of South America. It began decades ago with erecting intelligence and terrorist networks in Latin America under the guise of cultural exchange. That turned into greater diplomatic and economic outreach at the turn of the century almost doubling its embassies in Latin America from six to eleven in less than six years (2004-2010). And now that South America has shifted to the radical Left, Iran is capitalizing by sending Naval warships to begin destabilizing the maritime borders of the region.”
Senator Cruz also urged the current administration to impose sanctions in the wake of this development, “The Biden administration is obligated to impose relevant sanctions, reevaluate Brazil’s cooperation with U.S. antiterrorism efforts, and reexamine whether Brazil is maintaining effective antiterrorism measures at its ports. If the administration does not, Congress should force them to do so.”
