I know, but I don’t know why.

Was there a ‘Hellman’s’ already on the market so they couldn’t use the name?

Like ‘Budweiser’ in Germany can’t use their own name because there was already one there for hundreds of years.....................

Hellmann’s mayo was introduced out East by a German immigrant and was hugely popular. Later, the Postum Co. introduced their own mayo out West called Best Foods. Postum bought out Hellmann’s, allowing Herr Hellmann to retire. Both brands were so popular and well-known in their respective regions that Postum Co. opted to keep both names. Postum changed its name to Best Foods, then was bought out by Corn Products Co., which changed its name to CPC Int’l, then to Bestfoods. Thru it all, Best Foods mayo and Hellmann’s “east of the Rockies” retained their respective names. Only the labels were changed to become identical except for the names.
