Binary means singular, whereas non-binary indicates that the person is not singular. Of course, all of that is nonsense, though there are a few whose genitalia may be somewhat blurry.

I would personally ignore it, if they weren't adamant that I refer to them by some BS pronouns they have chosen for themselves.

Non-binary indicates person ain’t singular. Multiple personality disordered people (MPD, now DID) think they have multiple personalities within them. This is the result of extreme child sexual abuse, starting at young age and continuing for years. My guess is many transgenders and non-binaries suffered from child sexual abuse, and that part of themselves is asking for healing. Very loudly.
