A World War II bomb exploded in the English town of Great Yarmouth on Friday as workers attempted to diffuse it, according to police.

The device was discovered Tuesday in a river crossing in Great Yarmouth. It was located by a contractor working on the third crossing over the River Yare.

And on Friday, Norfolk Police revealed there had been an “unplanned” detonation.

No injuries were reported and police said all army and emergency service personnel were accounted for.

Army specialists had been cutting the bomb using a technique that creates a slow burn of the explosives, police said. Workers began attempting to cut into the bomb on Thursday.

By “accounted for”, is it meant they found all the pieces?

Reminds me of an old movie Ten Seconds to Hell (1959) about defusing bombs.

“Diffuse? Maybe that was their problem.”

Original article had “disarm” and “defuse”

Best show ever was the British 1980s series “Danger: UXB.” It traces the “careers” of young men in Britain tasked with disarming unexploded bombs. It’s more of a psychological study of the toll that task took on the survivors. I highly recommend it. Being a TV series, it can develop the characters over ten or twelve episodes.

A handful survived. The psychological toll on them was horrific. They went into it all ebullient and excited and came out mental wrecks. It was probably better to get blown to bits.

Like all good war movies, they also show what happens when the new recruits meet the grizzled veterans.

It was a real meat grinder, as bad as any battlefield.

Perhaps worse. At least in combat you have the luxury of being able to shoot back!

“Army specialists had been cutting the bomb using a technique that creates a slow burn of the explosives,…”

Well we don’t have to ask “what could go wrong “ with THAT one…

I didn’t find the reason why Great Yarmouth would be bombed in the first place but, judging from the old pictures there was significant bombing there.

I went there once on a warm day to go swimming with my wife and baby daughter. I touched my toe into the North Sea and gaaaaaaaawd it was cold! I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed a single minute of it, so we just sunbathed, maybe got a cup of tea and some chips.

“Danger UXB”

Who knew the UX stood for “UneXpected?”

What’s with the blue smoke? Sure this wasn’t just some over-the-top “gender reveal” stunt?

That’s a very good point. In battle, you get the satisfaction of taking out as many of the opposing bastards as you can.
