Heartbreaking photos. The one of the father holding his daughters hand while the rest of her was under rubble got to me. He was telling her, “I am here with you daughter”

I truly understand the pain of seeing family members suffer or losing a loved one.
But I find it very hard to be very concerned about a Moslem nation having a disaster, since they are the cause of so many deaths, rapes, slavery, and suffering purely due to religion.

The above also has an interesting, if tragic discussion about the “pancake” building collapses.

What I don’t know is the nature of the soils & bedrock. In the USA, the region around the New Madrid Fault is particularly problematic, leading to wickedly efficient propagation of the ground waves over a VERY large area, and drastic soil liquefaction. Some of the accounts from the 1811-12 quake series refer to 10 ft. high ground waves. Even if “10 ft.” is exaggerated, show me a large building that can withstand that...
