Interesting!

I had to leave my reel-to-reel Teac behind when I moved a long time ago. I loved that thing.

The original reel to reel in my dad's cabinet was a "Viking" transport with internal tubes. The "nice" one was an all "solid state" Panasonic. Included in our maintenance supplies was a head demagnetizer and some "q tips" with solvent to remove accumulated iron oxide from the heads. Both were "bullet proof" devices that could easily be in service today.

My 8 track recorder is a Panasonic device. I can still play the old 8-track tapes, but I can't get blanks anymore. A similar thing has happened to my BluRay recorders. I have devices that can do double layer/double side recording. Another has double layer recording on one side, and laser etch capability on the label side. Wonderful capability, but the media vendors aren't keeping the shelves stocked anymore.
