sea chest
A watertight box built against the hull of the ship communicating with the sea through a grillage, to which valves and piping are attached to allow water in for ballast, engine cooling, and firefighting purposes. Also, a wooden box used to store a sailor's effects.

Interesting. The ship’s sea chest balanced and cooled the ship and a sailor’s sea chest contained personal items that kept him balanced and calm. I never knew ships has one.
Do they still call the place sailors store their belongings a sea chest on modern ships? Or a locker? .
