It’s been 4 days since the Special Joint Meeting of the AZ Senate Committee on Elections. While twitter was buzzing as people watched the hearings live, it was the testimony of
@BregerFine regarding the investigations of @Thaleresq that really caught fire.
Yet, here we are on Monday morning, after a weekend full of tweet threads and Spaces left with so many questions.
The allegations are stunningly outrageous in scope. However, given the corruption we’ve seen at many levels over the last few years alone, they leave reasonable people to acknowledge this type of illegal activity, involving the Cartels with citizens and civic leaders is no longer implausible.
Many questions have been raised regarding lack of professional presentation of the docs Thaler’s assembled, one example: the failure to number pages provided to the Committee, among many other flaws.
Questions about Thaler’s relationship to the key participant he names, Brittany Chavez, his ex wife, child custody issues, threats to each of their safety certainly muddy the waters. Intentionally? Maybe, but is it difficult to believe operations such as this wouldn’t be messy if Cartel driven?
Many question why Thaler’s investigation was delivered to then Gov Ducey, how and by whom.
Logical people wonder why this wasn’t provided to AG Brno’s office, or other law enforcement agencies to pursue? Those same people however, now question those offices and agencies ethics and intent. Had they received the information, would they pursue it or bury it, as seems to be so popular these days?
It neatly frames a stark reality in which we increasingly find ourselves. To whom does one turn, if those sworn with enforcing the law, do so now selectively?
To me, a most telling element has been the reaction locally by media, politicians, consultants and commentators. Until late on Saturday when Guru sent up a flare, they all had been radio silent.
While we’re well accustomed to AZ media’s status quo of either ignore or destroy inconvenient news stories, it was eerily silent everywhere else. Fear was palpable. People discussing it out in public practically whisper. That reaction has done more to validate this is worth deeper investigation than anything Thaler has said in any of his rather disjointed interviews on Spaces etc.
Late yesterday, @WendyRogersAZ issued a letter from AZSenate about the hearing. While some have been quick to call it a walk back. I didn’t read it that way. She’s correct that the venue for such allegations isn’t a Senate Hearing, if we were operating in what most considered traditional procedure. However I suspect the vast majority of us agree, no matter our perspective that we are not operating in “normal times”. Given the odds that an investigation this explosive would have been buried by the powers that be, who may or may not be involved in fraudulent schemes, perhaps a live hearing on the internet was the only way, even if unpolished.
Let’s see what happens...
