Skydiver recovering after falling onto California home

“It felt like forever, just looking at him … We stood there in, like, shock just going, ‘He has to be dead,'” said Amber Sweet-Smith, who saw the injured skydiver in her yard in Oceanside moments after he fell last week.

“We usually hear the screaming or, you know, people laughing — just in the air, and he heard like an unusual scream, looked up, saw the guy and went, probably in his head, ‘Oh ****, he’s going to hit our house,'”

“It felt like the whole wall shook. … It was scary,”

“One of the other parachuter guys said he saw him and knew he was in trouble and landed in the street...so he was pretty helpful back there, too.”

“We’re just grateful that he’s fine, you know, a few broken bones. I mean, looking at him when he moaned, did the first moan and everything, it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is a miracle,'”

You might be thinking of Nicholas Alkemade, a British tail gunner who fell 18,000 feet into a snowdrift in Germany in 1944, suffering a broken wrist and leg.

Alan Magee was an American ball-turret gunner who fell 22,000 feet and hit the glass roof of the St. Nazaire train station, in 1943. He was very badly injured but survived the war in a POW camp and lived to a few weeks short of 84.

I do know they give you nasty looks bringing a parachute on a commercial plane.

“So we’re ALL just supposed to die together? I don’t even know y’all.”

I guess that makes sense.

while I always try to be prepared like a boy scout and do carry hammocks in all my cars, I will probably never own a larger parachute.

I know, right? I figured every pilot should know how to use one and actually do a jump. I decided I preferred jumping. I once took out someone’s sheep fence in New Zealand. Not as thrilling as hitting a house. LOL.

AND the little old lady who lives in the house said God finally answered my prayer and sent me a man.
THAT IS THE REST OF THE STORY!

I was at a friend’s house a few weeks ago a few days after I went skydiving. There’s an airport near them that has a skydiving operation. One of my friend’s sons told me they hear the skydivers over their house.

“What, you hear the planes?”

“No. the screams.”

For the record, I just enjoyed the ride with a big smile. No screams, but there was a fleeting “What did I just do?” moment as my tandem instructor and I exited the plane at 13,000 feet.
