Long is among a group of retired agents who say the FBI is already both politicized and weaponized. They trace the roots of these problems to the massive reorganization undertaken by former Director Robert Mueller after 9/11. Citing an avalanche of intelligence failures leading up to the attacks, critics demanded reform. Mueller decided the answer was centralized control from Washington, D.C..
Mueller created what are called flying squads, Long says: “When there was a big case, he would fly a squad in from headquarters rather than use the boots on the ground.”
Kurt Siuzdak, who retired from the FBI last year, now runs a law firm representing FBI whistleblowers. He says Mueller began hiring non-FBI agents for important functions such as liaising with the public and with congressional offices. The end result of his reorganization was a cultural shift within the agency. “The politics became more important than real world investigative experience,” Siuzdak says. He means party politics—as in doing the bidding of the party in power. “You had guys who had no ability to actually do cases becoming managers, and then that group started self-selecting.”
These trends accelerated under Mueller’s successor, James Comey, who took office in 2013. Three retired agents interviewed for this story all pinpointed a single day when they knew the FBI had lost its way: July 5, 2016.
That was the day Comey announced Hillary Clinton would not be prosecuted over her private email server. The announcement came as Clinton was in the midst of her presidential campaign. Many people—from ordinary Americans to those in law enforcement—found Comey’s statement stunning. “That is not something the FBI does,” says Doug Wolfe, who served in the agency in the 1980s. “The FBI investigates, and the DOJ attorneys make the decision to prosecute.”

We all know about J. Edgars secret files which he used to blackmail the government. Why should we believe that the apples have fallen far from the tree?
I’ve long suspected this. Interesting read.
You beat me to it. J. Edgar Hoover: the FBI has been corrupted since day one.
JFK? J. Edgar strikes again.
Centralized control sounds soooo American. /s
You would think this strategy would have sent up red flags among Republicans in Congress. Christ, all it takes is to listen to Mueller for a few minutes to know that he should never be in our government. Are Republican congressmen that poorly educated? Do they know anything about communists? Don’t they recognize how this aligns with Soviet and ChiCom doctrine? This is a matter of it looks like 💩, and smells like 💩, then it probably is 💩. Since 9/11, all of government has become larger, more centralized and more authoritarian. It gets worse each day. We no longer live in a representative republic with strong federalism. We don’t hear Republicans talk about small government, they just pile it on, spend our money and retire rich via public disservice.
Oh, so true.
To be accepted into the FBI academy for training, applicants must be capable of doing one pushup with no time limit.
For individuals to qualify for the 21-week intensive program at the F.B.I academy, they must pass The Physical Fitness Test :
Push-Ups, as many as possible untimed

These kinds of tactics by the FBI are a threat to the U.S. public. They’re intended to intimidate.
And if I’m not mistaken, it was Mueller who changed the hiring practices. He didn’t want Conservative, white guys. Lots of them, many from local law enforcement and the military, found themselves getting the NoGo snthat they weren’t acceptable candidates.
Now, it’s all about DEI and the results of that will soon become apparent.
I always found it amazing that any time someone wanted to talk negatively about mueller, one of the first things brought up was that he was a Marine in Vietnam.
As if that made him untouchable.
Bttt.
