There go the property values.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez compared Astoria, Queens to the People’s Republic of China during an inauguration ceremony this week for a fellow socialist, newly elected state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez.
“Kristen is like the last Infinity Stone to the People’s Republic of Astoria. With her election, we now have DSA members elected to every level of government” in the neighborhood, AOC boasted on Thursday, ignoring China’s horrific history of committing human-rights atrocities, as she instead referenced a plot line from “The Avengers” Marvel series.
Brooklyn Councilman Ari Kagan, who grew up in Belarus under Soviet Union rule, ripped AOC and her socialist allies, who he said, “adore failed communist ideas that so many people ran away from.”
“Her statement is an insult not just to Chinese Americans who left the communist People’s Republic for a chance to live in a free Democratic society - but to all Americans,” he said. “The last thing we need here is to recreate the system where government stifles the market economy, exchange of ideas, free press and independent courts.”
Others warned the neighborhood is doomed should socialism take hold.
“RIP Astoria, Queens,” tweeted David Grezelcki in response to a post cheering the comments by the New York City Democratic Socialists of America.

Maybe ms. AOC can see herself committing the same type of atrocities if supported by a Communist regime such as China.
I’m afraid the ‘good ol US of A’ is no more
NYC is forever changing....
In my lifetime I can remember Astoria being pretty solid Irish. Then it was the Greeks that held sway. Now it appears to be the Chinese, although having left Fun City 20 years ago, I can only go by stories like this.
Kinda raciss chicom talk coming from the bartender. Commies should not be allowed to hold office in the good ol’ US of A.
Coming from a really dumb bartender.
Three comments from the Post:
1. Back in the 1990's, Astoria was a nice Greek-American neighborhood, with lots of terrific Greek restaurants. Of course, it had to be destroyed, just like so many other fine working class neighborhoods in the city, either through gentrification or through the rise of the "underclass."2. My mother is 90 years old. She grew up in Astoria across the street from the Astoria Park and attended P.S. 122. She loves to tell me me stories about life in Astoria - how beautiful the park was, how safe it was, what a wonderful education she received in school.
Most of the kids were poor but life was good: no crime (except for one flasher in the park); kids respected their teachers (if they misbehaved, they got hit by the teachers; but wouldn't dare tell their parents, because their parents would hit them again if they found out); the park was spotless because all garbage was picked up.
On hot summer nights, everyone left their doors open because there was no fear of crime. Most of the kids were children of immigrants and were inculcated with American values in school (sang patriotic songs, went to patriotic assemblies where they had to wear uniforms with crisply ironed white shirts).
My mother tells of being embarrassed when approached by her mother on the street because she didn't want anyone to hear her speaking in her native Greek, lest anyone think that she was not "American".
Back then people worked for a living; they did not receive public assistance, except for unemployment when people may have gotten laid off. My mother fondly speaks of riding the subways back from dances at 1 am without fear of crime. She misses those beautiful times. When I see this bigmouth Ocasio Cortez referring to the Peoples Republic of Astoria, I feel sick to my stomach.
3. My great grandparents & grandparents lived in Astoria until their deaths, it was all Italian and Greek, they slept on the fire escapes in summer..I will tell you what happened, They built the queens bridge houses & Ravenswood!! The politicians quickly found out how to stay in power forever was to coddle & BUY this new class of New Yorkers! 🤬🤯🇺🇸
Like the comments say above that was what all of America was like to live in. Gone now.
I was born in a Jewish neighborhood- the first gentiles!. By 1947, no Jewish families and it became a min-UN. By 1949, it was predominantly black and by 1951 it was mostly Puerto Ricans. Three turnovers in six years!
It sounds like they do though. So what, the local congresscritter (AOC) is a DSA member, now the state senator -
I’m assuming the city councilcritter is too.
John Jacob Astor et al. must be turning over in their graves.
I have to wonder whether she adores the chicoms because they call themselves commies, or, because communism having utterly failed, they are now openly fascist.
Every time AOC opens her mouth she shows what an idiot she is. If she had any sense she would just keep quiet. Alas....
Astoria used to be a Greek neighborhood. I guess it has changed since I left NY.
Biden's under siege, because the Demagogic Party is a collection of violent rival street gangs.
