The Gross Vehicle Weight rules in most states are 80,000 pounds.

The GVW of an empty truck and trailer is about 30,000 pounds.

That allows for 50,000 pounds of cargo for a diesel powered truck.

If a battery pack for a semi truck is 25,000 pounds, then the cargo is reduced to 25,000 pounds for an electric powered truck.

The economics are not looking good.

The whacko environmental left will demand that the government add electric wire infrastructure to our highways and then demand that all vehicles have pantographs on their roofs to supply the electricity to run, just like with trains.

Imagine the boondoggle that presents the opportunity for graft and insider trading to become yugely rich on this scam.

And it is highly efficient and greatly multiplies torque. A much smaller diesel engine can do the same work as a large diesel engine when in this configuration.

We should have done it with cars and trucks 80 years ago. That is about how long we have had the technology.

I still think that is the answer. I’ve been pushing this since the late 70’s. I’m guessing there is some problem that I am not privy to. But it seems to me that a small gas- or diesel-powered, super-efficient, computer-controlled ICE running when necessary to recharge a smaller battery pack would be a workable solution.

The whole goal of these EVs is to create a world where everyone and everything is located in smaller sections so we will all be confined to our “limited area.

Yes this! Been working for trains for over 60 years. Very efficient. All the benefits of electric - high torque and great acceleration - with all the benefits of diesel - relatively cheap, constant recharge and quick refueling.

20-some years ago, Car & Driver magazine ran an article comparing energy efficiency of various forms of transportation, taking into account the costs to manufacture the vehicles, to pump oil and refine fuels from it, to generate and distribute electricity, and I don’t remember what all. The most efficient way to move a given tonnage was steel wheels on steel rails, powered by diesel-electric locomotives.

I should find that article again.

Y’all forgetting to bring another element into this “equation”. It’s called elevation. I wonder just how these electric rigs will do climbing the Grapevine, or Tehachapi, or Great Tejon Pass or even El Cajon just to mention a few.
