In peaceful times, Soledar was known for its massive underground salt mine, whose tunnels go on for more than 200 kilometres, stretching underneath the town itself and across the surrounding region.
The largest such mine in Europe, it served not just as an economic producer but as a tourist attraction, with guided tours costing visitors a few hundred dollars.
Sightseers could take in displays of mining equipment and view sculptures carved from salt, as well as visit the bar, accommodation, shops and even an underground chapel.
There's also a sanatorium, which made use of the environment's year-round cool temperature and constant air pressure to help treat lung conditions.
The largest and most well-known cavern is called Chamber 41, which at 135 metres long, 17 metres wide and 24 metres high hosted classical concerts and soccer matches before crowds of hundreds.
Today, salt production at the mine has ceased, and the caverns sit empty as fighting rages above.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says no wall in Soledar has been left standing, and the surrounding land is covered in Russian corpses.

Soledar Salt Mine
During the Battle of Soledar on 5 January 2023, the Wagner Group and Russian Armed Forces took parts of Soledar’s east, forcing the Armed Forces of Ukraine to step back and take up defences further west and in the central parts of Soledar.[12] The salt mine has since become a critical point for the Ukrainian defence of Soledar and Bakhmut, utilizing the deep tunnels of the salt mine to maintain a defensive line in Soledar, as well as to keep stockpiles of supplies and launch attacks on Russian positions from their rear.[13] On 10 January 2023, pro-Russian outlets, including Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed the mines were largely occupied by Russian and Wagner Forces, although these reports were not independently verified.[14] However, between 11 and 13 January 2023, major Russian offensives towards the central part of Soledar made large progress. At the same time, Russian forces north and south of Soledar made large advances over the countryside to the roads, threatening encirclement of the central parts of Soledar. Thus, the Ukrainians were forced to step back to the west of Soledar, putting much of the Soledar Salt Mine under Russian control.[15][16]

No thanks, I’ll keep my few hundred, I can’t imagine a salt mine that interesting.
An ‘in the wild’ rumor sez that there be gold stored in those mines somewhere.
The gold is that they can hide buttloads of tanks and artillery under there and HIMARS can’t hit it.
NATO wasted too many good Uke’s to defend the salt mines.
What are they hiding in the salt mines??
Bkmk
You want to see a salt mine, they have massive underground salt mines in Kansas. I don’t know if they are this big, but I imagine you could arrange a tour for a lot fewer $$.
Age of the salt deposit, in years. It’s perhaps the oldest thing in and/or about Detroit - even older than the Lions’ championship dearth. Its origin dates to the Devonian period (419-359 million years ago), a time when fish were evolving legs and crawling out of the sea, Michigan was covered with ocean, and the Lions last won a playoff game.

No idea we had so many salt deposits in the USA.
Because the Uke's can't send drones/UAVs into salt mines?

The openings sound like a good target for some bunker buster bombs. Then blow up any ventilation shafts.
It wasn’t NATO fighting.
The Ukrainians are fighting Putin’s army
The salt mines are a place to store ammo that is not susceptible to artillery strikes. There is no other military reason.
Lol, that’s funny right there!
Must be an amazing trip, living in a fantasy
Nope, it’s a fact. There are no NATO troops in Ukraine.
This wasn’t NATO fighting.
The Ukrainians are fighting Putin’s army
Ha Ha Ha, you break me up
Provide any facts to your statement.
I am telling you there are no NATO troops in Ukraine. There is zero evidence for this.
Do you have any? If not, then admit that you are wrong
There are NATO member troops in Ukraine
Everyone, cept you, understands

Ukraine has become a de facto member of the Nato alliance, the Ukrainian defence minister says, as Western countries, once concerned that military assistance could be seen as an escalation by Russia, change their “thinking approach”.
In an interview with the BBC, Oleksii Reznikov said he was sure Ukraine would receive long-sought weapons, including tanks and fighter jets,
