Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said on Wednesday that the man who shot and killed 13-year-old Karon Blake on Saturday morning is a government employee.
The shooting happened at around 4 a.m. on Quincy Street, when a homeowner went outside after hearing noises and observed 'someone that appeared to be tampering with vehicles,' according to police.
The homeowner opened fire with a registered firearm after a brief interaction with the teenager, who later died from his injuries at a local hospital. The man phoned 911 after shooting Blake and was performing CPR on the boy when police arrived, Chief Robert Contee III of the Metropolitan Police Department said.
Contee has declined to identify the government employee, but said on Tuesday that he is a Black man with a concealed carry permit.
Mayor Bowser said on Wednesday that the government employee does not work in a public safety role and has been placed on administrative leave while police investigate the shooting.
Now, the local community is demanding the homeowner's identity be released and that he be charged with murder.
D.C. Police have said they are talking to the US Attorney's Office to decide if charges should be filed. Identities are typically not released until that point.
Contee said it was not unusual in the US capital for police not to release the name of a crime suspect before an arrest warrant has been secured, and to not arrest someone immediately.
'There's been too much misinformation swirling around this incident. Too many people have made assumptions about this case, and it is unfair to the grieving family,' Contee said on Tuesday.
'People are making allegations centered around race, and that is wrong.'

Raised by grandma? I would bet there is zero parenting being done by anyone. How about the 13 yo occasionally crashes at his grandma’s house.
Thank God for that. Otherwise he would be publicly lynched and BLM would torch the city.
Sorry about junior biting the dust, but as the say "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime." In this case we are talking eternity.
