One of Japan's biggest movie studios (Shochiku, as I recall) produced an outstanding movie with the English title "Japan's Longest Day." Well worth watching and accurately subtitled in English.

The emperor himself had to intervene to move forward with the surrender, so great was the opposition among the general staff.
