Aurora Police Department aiming for 30% female force by 2030

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) – Inside the Aurora Public Safety Training Center, a small group gathered Saturday to learn about policing.
But this group looked a bit different than the majority of Colorado police officers because all of them were women.
The Women’s Informational Academy is just one step toward an ambitious goal for the department, which hopes to have women make up 30% of its police force by 2030.
“It’s really empowering,” said Marian Baena, a future recruit for the department.
Baena currently works in a restaurant but is planning to try and become an Aurora police officer.
“I was like what am I doing here, making money serving food when I could be doing something more purposeful or impactful to the community,” Baena said.
Currently, the department has 76 female officers, making up less than 11% of the 700 sworn officers on staff.
Nationwide, the average isn’t much higher, sitting at around 12%.
Studies have shown female officers use force less often and less excessively. They’re also involved in fewer lawsuits.
“Women are very good communicators,” Officer Mary Fernandez said. “We are very good problem solvers. We have this natural ability to calm people, especially our male counterparts. So, there’s just so many studies that show having women is beneficial.”
Fernandez helped lead the class on Saturday, hoping to inspire other women to pursue a career in law enforcement.
“They’re all here for the same reason,” she said. “They all have that calling.”
If you’re interested in potentially joining the department, you can find more information at JoinAuroraPD.com.
Aurora PD is a mess. They're always in the news for the wrong reasons. They just fired their bull dyke chief, and hired Art Acevedo as interim chief. We'll see how that goes.
Impressive considering females make up 50.5 percent of the population. Sarc
Forgot to add, they fired the bull dyke chief because of domestic issues. Go figure.
I hope they’ve got the money for all the lawsuits the female officers are going to cause. They can’t fight, they’ll just shoot you.
Sounds like a potential discrimination case for qualified males.
Because genitalia is more important than competence.
Women aren’t equal.
Never have been, never will be.
Are school teachers and nurses next?
As a large part of Police work is paper work, women Officers can handle that part.
They also tend to make more traffic stops and write more tickets.
But when it comes to the dangerous part of the job( when physical force is needed) that’s a fail and that is why they
have less confrontations and get sued less.
why not hire the most qualified? another quota system?
Acevedo was a failure as chief of police in Austin, Houston, and Miami. He should fit right in with the mess of Aurora PD.
Yeah, that’s why I mentioned him.
“the dangerous part of the job”
In those situations they have to hope some big male (either a partner or good citizen) is available to rescue them....
So, Aurora has run out of Social Workers to handle traffic tickets and domestic disputes?
*SNORT*
This will end badly. GTFO while you can!
““Women are very good communicators,” Officer Mary Fernandez said. “We are very good problem solvers. We have this natural ability to calm people, especially our male counterparts. So, there’s just so many studies that show having women is beneficial.””
Wrong. This is the same as saying “there’d be no wars if all the leaders in the world were women”. Sorry, that’s just narcissistic BS. There’s NOTHING worse than a woman on a power trip that compensates for their fragility by using excessive force, often by reaching for a gun inappropriately. Women, throughout history, have been the instigators of conflict and war. To paint them as angels, in contrast to the “toxic masculinity” of males as a broad stereotype, is just ignorant and dangerous.
This also requires hiring on the basis of sex, which is illegal. If you’re going to have an artificial balance, based on quotas, instead of natural selection then you’re asking for trouble - especially in law enforcement. Most people aren’t cut out for it. Putting people in that position that do not have the right character is going to get people killed, both civilians and officers.
That’s what happened the last time someone proposed objective hiring standards.
LOL!
This is a BOMBSHELL if the Aurora PD has figured out the definition of “woman”.
