A great film. Probably watched it 30 times in my youth.

I liked The Waking of Ned Devine, but not sure I would watch it over and over. Good for a laugh, though.

The only "unknown" movie (at least one that I had never heard of) that I watched which I was surprised to completely enjoy. And I always wondered why it wasn't better known was ...

I was watching an interview with Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau (from 1987 I think). Mathau was saying there are still some good movies being made (this was 35 years ago!) but movies “today” are made by people that want to make money - bankers basically. So they will make whatever the latest polls say people will want to see. That is why you have Rambo VI. They don’t want to take a risk on a film that is different. “Movies now are made by morons for morons.”

Per the list, I thought THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO was really strong.

Yes! I’ve seen Grand Canyon, Don Juan DeMarco, and The Gods Must Be Crazy. The first two were worthwhile. The last we actually own, as any family should.
I saw a movie this fall that deserves more attention: See How They Run. I recommend it.

That, and Bridge on the River Kwai. It's like it's the same character, different theater of war.

Re: Seen any of ‘em?
I have seen four of the films on your list.
"Don Juan" and "Harry" I remember well, but I only saw them one time.
"Grand Canyon" - Top Secret Confession: I have been in love with Mary-Louise Parker for thirty years!

“Keeper of the Flame”
Tracy & Hepburn, who I usually don’t care about.
But it presages JFK’s assassination and government cover-ups by about 20 years.

Stardust was quite good. I liked Sunshine as well. And Vanilla Sky.
The Village was stupid and awful.
The rise of digital cameras has been both a blessing and a curse. Digital has enabled independents to make movies that would never have been made if the makers had had to cover the cost of film processing and editing. So there are some excellent low budget movies now but also much more terrible dreck. Simply there are far too many movies and TV shows. Most terrible. But still some that are as good as anything from the past.
It’s a low bar since the horrible Gone With The Wind is considered amongst the best.

Movies and show these days are made by poofters, for poofters. For the most part.

I agree that Mississippi Masala has been underrated, but I would also add Perfect and Body Heat to the list. Both were very good and definitely underrated.

“Stalag Seventeen, William Holden’s master work.”
He made some great movies, and that is way up there. So was “The Wild Bunch,” and “Bridge On the River Kwai,” and “The Bridges at Toko-Ri,” and “Born Yesterday,” and “The Horse Soldiers.” So many to choose from.

I thought she was great in “Fried Green Tomatoes. But Kathy Bates stole that movie.
