Has anyone learned a foreign language as an adult using an online website? I’m looking to learn a foreign language via online “schooling” and was hoping to get some FReepers feedback. Thank you in advance.
Memrise is good for vocabulary.

Immersion is the most effective way to learn a different language. You can’t get tone, inflection or pronunciation from book learnin. Get yourself a wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend who is a native speaker to teach you. You have to get to the point where you’re “thinking” in that other language.
Years ago, in the days of the 386 home computer, I tried a French language program. “Bon jour,” the first word out of the chute; whenever I repeated it into the mic, all I got was barely a nudge from the needle. In frustration, I said “bullshit” and the needle pegged. Into the trash went the cd.
I already know some Spanish, but was looking to learn Arabic.
Mainly to exercise my brain, but also business opportunities.
Afterwards, I would again work on Spanish. I took 3 years of Spanish and know first generation Americans that are fluent speakers.
We used Pimsler, before our trip to France/Italy....several years ago.
Very helpful.
I have started doing the reverse courses in Duolingo, like Polish to English. You get a lot of new words that way.
Is Memrise an app?
I took 2 years of Latin at UF in 2011-2012.
Although it’s an app, I really liked the free Duolingo for Russian. I just spent a few minutes per day for over a year and learned a lot. I can read it exceptionally well but my ear isn’t very good for it yet.
I’d guess this is true of most languages. For me, it’s relatively easy to follow grammar rules and speak, but comprehending spoken language is another thing entirely.
A really popular homeschool program is called - The Latin Road to an English Grammar. It helps parent who have never taken Latin to teach it to their children.

My daughter took 4 years of Latin in HS. You had to be recommended by your teachers to get in as a freshman. No nonsense. This was in the early to mid 2000’s. I think the teacher has passed by now. I do wonder if it’s still offered.
She never learned Spanish or French like I did, but as everyone knows, if you don’t use it, you lose it. You have to keep up with it. At least, that’s how it is for me. It would be nice to get a refresher, though.

All true. FR seems spoken one way and written another. German - very structured .... know the rules, learn the vocabulary, plug it in and let it rip.
It wasn’t until I lived (immersed) for a year in Quebec “thinking (hence hearing and speaking) in French” kicked in. If one learned Parisian-FR from a text book or guidebook, Can-FR natives would (im)politely “help” me. Got to love that French pride.
I suppose this could be done over the internet with video conferencing. But that's not what this is, right?
It’s my understanding that is what our Federal agencies use.
