Dec 8 (Reuters) - Canada's TC Energy shut its Keystone pipeline in the United States after more than 14,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into a creek in Kansas, making it one of the largest crude spills in the United States in nearly a decade.

The cause of the leak, which occurred in Kansas about 20 miles (32 km) south of a key junction in Steele City, Nebraska, is unknown. It is the third spill of several thousand barrels of crude on the pipeline since it first opened in 2010.

The 622,000 barrel-per-day Keystone line is a critical artery shipping heavy Canadian crude from Alberta to refiners in the U.S. Midwest and the Gulf Coast. It is unclear how long the closure will last.

Steele City is roughly the junction where Keystone splits, with one segment moving crude to Illinois refineries and the other carrying oil south to Oklahoma and the Gulf Coast.

If the spill is located south of the junction, TC may be able to quickly restart the segment to Illinois, RBC analyst Robert Kwan said in a note.

Past shutdowns have generally lasted about two weeks, but this could last longer as it involves a water body, Kwan said.

That’s about 5000 sqfeet, assuming a 4” depth.

Oil is too messy, and environment ally dangerous, it should be put back into the ground where it came from, wait, what?

Is oil from the earth? Doesn’t that make it organic?

There was a news cast recently about electrical substations being attacked in Washington state and Oregon.

At one point some guy joins in from his mom’s basement on video wearing a “Populist Front” t-shirt. He said these types of attacks are known right-wing radical tactics.

And that is the kind of idiocy they put in their news programs!

Something doesn’t sound right... 14,000 barrels?? If I’m not mistakin, their are instruments installed that will shut down the system if point A is showing say 100gpm flow and point B shows a 99 gpm flow then the system should shut down immediately...

I sense something a foul!!

The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) ordered the pipeline to remain shut until the regulator authorizes a restart

We can safely assume the Keystone Pipeline will reopen after the 12th of never.

Why would you assume Russia was involved when your own federal government is working feverishly to deplete U.S. fossil fuel supplies?

622,000 barrels per day - 26,000 barrels per hour - 14,000 barrel spill.

Does that indicate it took 30 minutes before they turned off the pumps?

Has the spill been blamed on white supremacists?

In the past two weeks, several acts of vandalism against the Washington and Oregon electrical grids have been implicitly blamed on unnamed white supremacists because - you know - the grid vandalism in North Carolina was almost certainly done by white supremacists.

This business about “suspecting” right wing extremists is everywhere and is part of the communist playbook.
