Finland PM Sanna Marin says Europe is ‘not strong enough’ without the US

Finnish prime minister Sanna Marin has called for Europe to build its own defence capabilities in the wake of the war in Ukraine, saying that without US help it is not resilient enough.

Marin said that when Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, the priority of most Finns changed “overnight” to security.

The country is also concerned about large-scale illegal crossings as Russian men flee the mobilisation drive. About 40,000 Russians have entered Finland since the start of the war, according to foreign minister, Pekka Haavisto.

Finland, which has a population of 5.5 million, still has military conscription for men, and has a wartime troop strength of 280,000, with 870,000 trained as reservists. It spend 2% of GDP on defence, a higher proportion than most Nato members.

--- "Europe is ‘not strong enough’ without the US"

The population of Europe in its entirety is about 700 million, and the population of the European Union which is a subset of "Europe" is about 450 million people. That such an assertion is made shows the game.

335 million Americans are SUPPOSED to support and defend 700 million Europeans, and/or 450 million European Union member nations' populace.

Welfarism on a global scale is being asserted. Uncle Sugar Daddy is supposed to write checks for them, and Uncle World Cop is supposed to walk their beat. The con is great and pervasive.

About 40,000 Russians have entered Finland since the start of the war

And I’m sure that’s going to work out just fine.

A bunch of drunk, angry Russians living among angry Finnish that hate them.

Well, we’ve been doing it since the end of WW2, right? Why stop now?

How else have all the countries been able to enjoy their socialist wet dreams if it weren’t for US armored divisions, infantry divisions and squadrons of F16s & 15s?

Don’t they brag about spinning up their own EU army. Let me deal with it.

--- "Don't they brag about spinning up their own EU army. "

My wife and I were legal residents in Germany for years before returning to the states after retirement, and I have worked in many European lands. I will testify that many Europeans were quite content with their welfare state policies, as long as the US was paying and doing as much as it has been doing. We've been patsies, courtesy of the neo-con-lib political class here. Time for Europe to put on their "big boy" pants and support and defend themselves. All the talk about the European Army is just a Franco-German wet dream and echo of the last 150 years.

I might not agree completely. I doubt the Yourapeon elites fully realize how much our own elites are weakening the US military.

She’s right and she’s got the nerve to say this. I like her.

No translation needed. She said Europe needs to be able to defend itself and that means they need to pay for their own defense instead of having the US indirectly subsidize Europe’s social welfare states.

Exactly. The topic of NATO burden sharing has been discussed for at least 50 years, but we keep subsidizing it decade after decade. And who knows where the money really goes? We never audit any spending programs. We just keep doling it out in every large amounts. Its never going to stop.

It’s so stupid that the US bows to Europe daily when we could order them around and there’s not a thing they could do about it. Our govt is full of idiots.

This means they WILL NOT pay for their own defense, requiring American taxpayers to foot their bill, to accommodate their socialist spending OUR leftists drool over.
